Abstract

Polysaccharides, as renewable and biocompatible biopolymers, have garnered significant attention in materials science and biomedicine. Chemical functionalization particularly through grafting and cross-linking strategies, has emerged as a powerful approach to tailor their chemical, physical, and biological properties for advanced applications. These methods enable precise control over polysaccharide architectures, enhancing mechanical stability, solubility, and bioactivity while preserving their inherent biodegradability and low toxicity. This review highlights recent advancements in polysaccharide modification, emphasizing covalent grafting techniques, including radical polymerization and click chemistry, as well as chemical crosslinking approaches, with a particular focus on their biological applications.
