Abstract

Back ground

Breast carcinoma is a prevalent disease and represents a serious health problem for many women worldwide.,Spirulina platensis (SP) is a good antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and was proved to have apoptotic effect in many cancer models.

Objective

This study aimed to investigate the antioxidant and apoptotic effects of Spirulina platensis against 7,12-Dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA) induced breast cancer in animal model.

Method and Results

Forty five rats were divided into five groups, the first group was control (received a single dose of 2ml/kg b.wt of corn oil),the second was tumor group (received a single dose of 50mg/kg b.wt in 2ml corn oil),the third was SP (oral),animals bearing tumor received (500mg/kg b.wt) for four weeks orally, the fourth was SP(injection) in which rats bearing tumor injected by SP (50mg/kg b.wt) for 28 day and the fifth group was SP mix, modeled rats received both SP doses (oral and injection)for 28 days.

Our results showed that DMBA increased serum ALT,AST, urea and creatinine in addition to tissue MDA and caused a significant decrease in homogenate total antioxidant capacity beside a marked increase in homogenate Bcl2 and a significant decrease in tissue Bax , SP ameliorated the effect of DMBA which caused breast cancer in female rats, SP significantly increased tissue Bax and decreased Bcl2 when compared with normal and tumor bearing rats groups.TNFR1, TRADD and FADD in homogenate significantly increased due to SP treatment when compared also with both control and positive control., Our results cleared a marked improvement in liver enzymes (serum AST, ALT) and both serum creatinine ,urea as result to SP treatment in tumor bearing rats.

Conclusion

SP exhibited a good apoptotic and antioxidant effects against DMBA induced breast tumor in female rats.
