Biorecovery of Cupper (II) using Klebsiella pneumoniae Isolated from Wastewater Effluents

This study deals with the biosorption capacity of the microflora as Klebsiella pneumoniae biomass as a biosorbent for the removal of cupper (II) ions from polluted water samples. The biosorption of Cu(II) ions is determined at varying experimental conditions using a batch technique. The effects of pretreatment, initial metal ion concentration, initial pH, biosorbent dosage, contact time and temperature have been investigated. The optimum biosorption conditions for biosorption are as follows: 200 mg/L of Cu(II) as initial concentration, 0.7 mg/50 mL (dry wt. cell) biomass for biosorption, pH 7, temperature 30 °C, biosorption time 60 minutes and mixing speed 175 rpm. SEM and IR analyses are used for characterization of the biosorbent agent before and after the biosorption process. The present work reveals that K. pneumonia biomass is a good choice as a biosorbent for the recovery of Cupper from ion from polluted water samples.
