Chemical Composition, Antioxidant and Antibacterial Activities of Lavender and Marjoram Essential Oils
IN THIS STUDY we assessed the chemical composition, antioxidant…. and antibacterial activities of lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and marjoram (Majorana hortensis) essential oils (EOs). Marjoram and lavender EOs showed promising antioxidant and free radical scavenging activities by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrasyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay, ß-carotene bleaching test and 2,2′-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) assay. The three applied methods have shown that marjoram essential oil displays a strong antioxidant activity as well as good antibacterial activity.GC/MS analyses indicated that L. angustifolia essential oil consisted of linalool as the most abundant component (37.65%), followed by linalyl acetate (15.29 %), α-muurolene (8.59 %), allo-aromadendrene (6.03%), ß-phellandrene (4.39%) and other minor components. On the other hand, M. hortensis essential oil consisted of terpinen-4-ol (48.98%), α-terpinol (11.75%), γ-terpinene (9.64%), spathulenol (3.51%), linalyl acetate (2.58 %) and sabinene hydrate (2.30%) as the main constituents.Lavender and marjoram herbs presented considerable content of carbohydrates, protein, amino acids, crude fiber, EOs and minerals (Fe, Zn and Cu), low values of fats, ash and absence of mycotoxins.

Cytotoxicity of Novel Hydrazide-hydrazone Derivatives towards Tumor and Normal Cell Lines
THE REACTION of cyanoacetyl hydrazone with ninhydrin gave …….the hydrazide – hydrazone derivative 3. The reactivity of the later product towards different chemical reagents was studied. The cytotoxicity of the newly synthesized products was measured towards the three cancer cell lines, namely breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7), non-small cell lung cancer(NCI-H460) and CNS cancer (SF-268).

Synthesis and Surface Activity of Some Cationic Gemini Surfactants Containing Aliphatic Spacers
FOUR CATIONIC Gemini surfactants were synthesized and characterized using different tools. Their surface activities were measured using surface and interfacial tension measurements. The effect of their spacer chain length on the surface activity, emulsification power and interfacial tension was studied. The thermodynamic parameters showed the tendency towards micellization and adsorption. The results showed that longer spacers increased the micellization tendencies of the surfactants, while shorter spacers increased the adsorption propensity at the air-water interface.

Electrocatalytically Oxidized Starch as Sizing and Finishing Agent
HEREIN an industrial innovation was presented, where it ……provides cleaner, safer, and cheaper practice for sizing of cotton and cotton/polyester blend warp yarns. The innovation based on the use of electrocatalytically prepared oxidized starch using mixed oxidant generated via brine electrolysis as sizing agent. At electrolysis conditions: current density 7.5mA/cm2-12mA/cm2, temperature 30°C, initial pH 3, duration of the electrolysis 1 hr supporting sodium chloride concentration 7.5g/l, and material to liquor ratio 1:10, via Rhodium –titanium thermally activated modified electrode. Good sizing agent with suitable viscosity which leads to both formation of a film and penetration of the yarn was obtained. The apparent viscosity (151mpa.s-1/516) obtained at the above mentioned electrolysis conditions represents the proper oxidized starch used as sizing agent. This new formula leads to the reduction of the softener used with increasing sizing process efficiency.

TREATMENT of the 6-hydrazinopurine derivative 2a with. is ……. othiocyanates followed by chloroacetyl chloride afforded, the1,3-thiazolidine-2,4-dione-2-[9-aryl-9H-purin-6-yl] hydrazones (5). Moreover, the 2-substituted [1,2,4]triazolo[3,4-i]purines 9 and 10 were synthesized by reacting 2a with aldoses and cyclizing the obtained product.

In vitro Anti-inflammatory, Cytotoxic and Hepatoprotective Activities of Laurus nobilis L. (Lauraceae) Wood Extract and Its Constitutive Phenolics
THE POSSIBLE anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic and hepato-protective activities of Laurus nobilis L. wood extract was in vitro evaluated. The anti-inflammatory activity was assessed by measuring Nitric Oxide (NO) production by the inflammagen lipopolysacchride. The extract was evaluated for its cytotoxic activity on six different human cancer cell lines together with the normal non-malignant melanocytes cell line (HFB4) using the SRB assay. The hepatoprotective activity against paracetamol toxicity was determined using primary cultured rat hepatocytes. The extract showed moderate anti-inflammatory activity as shown in the amount of nitric oxide produced with a level of 4.3 μM /ml (67 % inhibition), in comparison to the potent anti-inflammatory drug Dexamethasone (95 % inhibition). The extract was found to have moderate cytotoxic activity against the tumor cell lines used at the applied concentrations with IC50 ranging from 15.5 – 47.6 μg/ml compared to the potent cytotoxic drug doxorubicin. The wood extract showed hepatoprotective activity against paracetamol toxic effect at concentration of 20g/ ml. The constitutive phenolics of L. nobilis L. wood were studied and led to the separation and identification of 12 compounds, all isolated for the first time from L. nobilis L. wood and were identified using chemical, conventional and advanced spectral techniques

Optimization of Biological Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles by Some Yeast Fungi
THREE strains of yeast fungi namely Saccharomyces cerevisiae (Baker’s yeast), Rhodotorula glutinis and Geotrichum candidum were tested for their potency in biosynthesis of AgNPs by direct exposure to silver nitrate solution. Absorption UV-Visible light spectroscopy is used to follow up with the reaction process. Transmission electron spectroscopy (TEM) is used to produce detailed information on the progress of reduction of silver nitrate (formation of silver nanoparticles) on the nanosecond timescale. Our measurements indicate that extracellular biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles AgNPs by different yeast strains produce AgNPs with the diameters in the range of 2.5-20 nm. The three yeast strains are environmentally friendly microorganisms, and they are known for their formation of extracellular enzyme and metabolites in very large amounts, which could be utilized in AgNPs synthesis. The present work is undertaken with a view to accomplish controlled size and shape of AgNPs by making use of the yeasts to manipulate key parameters which control growth and other cellular activities
