THE PRESENT study was performed in discharge basin of Suez Oil ….Petroleum Company (SOPC), which is located southwest of the Suez Gulf. Sediment samples were collected from this area and investigated in 2012 - 2013 by Gas chromatography, Ultraviolet, and FT-IR spectroscopy. Gas chromatography analysis revealed petrogenic pollution and traces of biogenic hydrocarbons could also be detected. The concentration of total alkanes and unresolved complex mixture (UCM) in sediment samples ranged from 1116.3 up to 2137.4 μg/g with average1638.683μg/g. dry weights, the discharge of hazardous materials such as petroleum and chemical solvents to the aquatic environment has become the focus of increasing regulatory and public concern because of the adverse impacts of such materials on human health and the environment; Petroleum concentrations as low as 0.1 ppm have been shown to be acutely toxic. As the concentration was greater than the natural background concentration; therefore, the region can be considered (highly) polluted. Despite the high concentration of anthropogenic contaminates including industries, processing activities and other non-point source pollution. The unusual results may be related to wastes of conversion operations of crude oil to refined products. The present work demonstrates the complexity of hydrocarbon forensics when applied to chronically contaminated environments.

Surface Modification of Mg-3Zn-0.8Ca Alloy Using Dual Micro-arc Oxidation (MAO) and Fluoridated Hydroxyapatite (FHA) Coatings

OME unsolved problems currently limit the use of Mg alloys for …. orthopedic application. Firstly, the coatings usually have poor adhesion if they are applied without an appropriate pre-treatment. Secondly, it is difficult to prepare a uniform, pore-free layer. The present article aims to overcome these obstacles and improve the corrosion resistance of the Mg alloy via combination between surface treatment and electrodeposition. The alloy surface was pretreated using micro-arc oxidation (MAO) to form an oxide layer upon which a top layer of fluoridated-hydroxyapatite (FHA) was electrodeposited. The corrosion behavior of both layers was evaluated in simulated body fluid (SBF) using potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance techniques. Surface characterization of the FHA, MAO, and MAO/FHA coatings was performed. Results show that MAO treatment decreases the corrosion current (icorr) of the Mg alloy from 7.5x10-5 A cm-2 to 1.19x10-6 A cm-2 and also increases the polarization resistance (Rp) about 6 times compared to the untreated alloy. FHA coat further enhances corrosion resistance of the alloy as shown by the increase of Rp by 14 times compared to the uncoated alloy. Pores blocking at MAO layer via FHA as top coat plays a key role in obvious corrosion resistance enhancement

Effect of Thiosulfate Ions on the Corrosion Behavior of Copper in Simulated Sea Water

SODIUM thiosulfate has a strong effect on the corrosion of …….copper in salt water. It promotes the anodic dissolution of copper, while the partial cathodic reaction is not affected. It also shifts the free corrosion potential in the active direction by hundreds of mV and causes extensive corrosion of the metal. The results are substantiated with SEM, EDS and XPS measurements. A mechanism is proposed to start with adsorption of thiosulfate ions on the copper surface followed by a corrosion reaction producing copper sulfide and hydrosulfite ions.

1-(1,2,3,4-Tetrahydronaphthalen-6-yl)-3- (1,3-diphenyl-1H-pyrazol-…...4-yl)prop-2-en-1-one (3) was synthesized and then treated with various hydrazine hydrate derivatives to afford the corresponding dihydropyrazoles 4-9, respectively. Condensation of pyrazole carbothioamide 9 with α-haloketones yielded the corresponding thiazole derivatives 10a,b. Also, the reaction of the chalcone 3 with various sulphonyl hydrazide derivatives produced the corresponding sulphonyl pyrazole derivatives 11a,b, while its reaction with hydroxylamine hydrochloride yielded the isoxazole derivative 12. Treatment of the chalcone 3 with thiourea or guanidine sulfate gave the pyrimidine derivatives 13 and 14 respectively. Furthermore, the pyrane derivatives 15-17 were obtained by cyclization of the chalcone 3 with malononitrile, ethyl cyanoacetate and/or ethyl acetoacetate respectively. In addition, 2-oxopyridine 18 was allowed to react with different alkyl halides to yield the corresponding 2-substituted pyridine derivatives 19-21. Schiff base 23 was obtained by the reaction of carbohydrzide derivative 22 with anisaldehyde. Some of synthesized compounds were evaluated for cytotoxicity activity against HepG2 (liver carcinoma cell line) and MCF-7 (brest carcinoma cell line) using Doxorubicin as a reference drug.
